In 2010, I was in a transition period after leaving an office job I’d had for fifteen years. During the down time that immediately followed, I was cleaning out my house; purging old stuff for a fresh start, and looking for direction. I found a soap-making book and kit I’d received as a gift years before. As a working mother with two young children, I’d never gotten around to using it. I almost tossed the kit into the donation pile, until I realized that finally, like Burgess Meredith’s character in my favorite episode of The Twilight Zone, I had time (as long as I didn’t break my glasses). So began my foray into the world of cold-process soap.
As a kid, I always loved to make “potions” from grass, flowers, and wild herbs, stirred with sturdy sticks in castoff pots from my maternal grandmother’s kitchen. This part of me awoke, rubbed her hands together, and quickly (with myriad grave errors early on) learned to make additions to the soap to change and improve it, and fell more and more in love with the hobby. As the results of my new passion began to overflow the household, I gave soap to family, neighbors, and friends, and eventually began to sell it. Tilted Haggis Soap Company was born. Eleven years later, we are changing our name and expanding the boundaries of what we offer.
